The numbers on my toaster dial are completely meaningless - a 3 on mine is like 2 minutes but my friend's 3 is 4 minutes. I always start conservative because burnt toast is garbage but under-toasted toast just needs 30 more seconds. Fresh soft bread toasts way faster than day-old dried out bread. Moisture content and thickness are everything. I keep notes on my phone for my favorite breads and their perfect times in my specific toaster because every toaster is different and every bread is different.
I learned lower heat for longer gives way more even toasting. High heat for short time can char the outside while the middle stays cold and soft. I use medium settings around 3-4 and adjust time not heat level. Higher settings are for when I'm rushed but quality suffers - the outside gets dark before the inside warms through. Professional kitchens use lower slower heat for even browning. The timer helps me experiment to find the sweet spot between speed when I'm late for work and quality when I actually have time for breakfast.
This drove me crazy until someone explained that toasters stay hot so the second batch cooks way faster in a pre-heated chamber. I reduce my time by 30-45 seconds for the second batch now. Or I wait 2-3 minutes between batches to let it cool. Toaster settings don't account for residual heat which is why they're so unreliable. This is even worse with toaster ovens which hold tons of heat. The timer saves me because if first batch took 3:00 I know to try 2:15 for the second batch instead of burning it like I used to do constantly.
If I see or smell smoke I immediately unplug the toaster and remove the bread. Burnt crumbs at the bottom or excessive heat can smoke or even cause small flames. I clean my toaster crumb tray weekly now because accumulated crumbs are a legit fire hazard. Never leave toasting unattended which is exactly where a timer helps - the alarm brings me back before disaster happens. If toast actually catches fire I unplug it and use baking soda never water because water and electricity are a bad combination. Prevention through timing and cleaning beats dealing with kitchen fires.
