Free Secret Santa timer for gift opening rotations. White Elephant rules: 2-minute open/steal window per turn. Keeps the game moving and prevents endless deliberation.
Each participant brings one wrapped gift. Randomly draw turn order. First person opens a gift. Each subsequent person can either unwrap a new gift or steal an already-opened gift. Stolen gifts must be opened by the person they were taken from. A gift can only be stolen 3 times before it is frozen. Last person has first pick.
1–2 minutes per turn is standard. This allows time to deliberate between stealing and opening without dragging the game. At large groups (15+), strict 90-second limits prevent the game from running 2+ hours. The timer removes the social awkwardness of lingering over the decision.
At 2 minutes per turn with 10 participants: 20 minutes minimum, 30–40 minutes with discussion and reactions. For 20 participants: 45–60 minutes. Add 15–20 minutes buffer for stealing back-and-forth chains. Plan the game session accordingly within your event schedule.
Secret Santa: each person is assigned one specific recipient and buys a personalised gift for them. White Elephant: generic gift for the group, gifting is random, stealing is part of the game. Yankee Swap is another name for White Elephant. Pollyanna is regional US slang for Secret Santa.
Office Secret Santa: £10–20 typically. Friend groups: £15–30. Family: £20–40. Luxury exchange: £50+. Agree and communicate the budget range clearly before the exchange — mismatched spending creates awkwardness. For White Elephant, a funny/unusual gift is often more valued than an expensive one.
