Free car wash timer for timing pre-wash, contact wash, and rinse stages. Proper timing prevents swirl marks and water spots. Start instantly.
A thorough two-bucket hand wash: 45–90 minutes including pre-wash, contact wash, rinse, and dry. A quick maintenance wash: 20–30 minutes. Rushing is the primary cause of swirl marks — working systematically through panels is more important than speed.
Bucket 1: clean soapy water. Bucket 2: plain rinse water with a grit guard. After each panel, rinse the wash mitt in bucket 2 before reloading with soapy water from bucket 1. This prevents dirt picked up from the paint from re-contaminating the clean water and being dragged across the surface.
5–10 minutes for most pre-wash products. Do not allow the product to dry on the surface — work in the shade or on a cool panel. The dwell time allows alkaline cleaners to encapsulate and loosen dirt before the contact wash, significantly reducing the abrasion needed.
Every 2–4 weeks in normal conditions. After motorway driving (tar, bugs, road film): within 48 hours. In winter with road salt: weekly washing prevents salt-induced corrosion. After bird droppings: immediately — the acid in droppings can etch clearcoat within 24 hours.
No — heat causes soap and water to dry on the surface before you can rinse it, leaving water spots and soap residue that are difficult to remove. Wash in shade, early morning, or evening. If washing in sun is unavoidable, work one small section at a time.
